Answer the question. FAIL x 3.. noooo x4

Thought I would come prepared as traveling with boards generally is a mess.. It is harder than you might think..
I present; straight answers by Continental Airlines;

"Message:Hi!
I just booked a flight with you with confirmation nr ***;
* FLIGHT nr's**

As I am traveling with a board-bag of 2 surfboards (6'1 & 6'6) + 1 checked in bag +1 hand luggage +1 laptop I would very much like to know how much I will be charged?

Will I will be charged $100 for each leg of the journey (tot $400) or $100 for each way? (tot $200) I would also like to know if I can check my boards all the way from Costa Rica to Sweden at once or would have to claim them in New York?

Please also let me know if it is possible to pay baggage fees online (at the same or a lower cost) before departure not to have to deal with it upon departure."

"Dear :
Carry-on Bag
Continental will permit one bag plus one personal item (see below), per customer to be carried on the aircraft. (Lap Top)
The maximum combined linear measurement (L + W + H) of the carry-on bag is 45 inches (115 cm)up to 14 in x 9 in x 22 in. The maximum weight of the carry-on bag is 40 pounds (18 kg).
First Checked Bag from South America to Europe the 1st Bag is free.
Sufboard - 1 bag containing 2 boards $100.00  each way unless:
Note: On Continental Airlines flights, surfboards, surfboard bags or wakeboards over 115 inches (292 cm) in length will not be accepted as checked baggage. On Continental Express* or Continental Connection flights, surfboards, surfboard bags or wakeboards over 80 inches (203 cm) in length will not be accepted as checked baggage.  Contact Cargo.
[This is a copy paste from their info page, the reason I wrote them were to get confirmation regarding my particular flight, remember?]

All checked bags have to be claimed and clear Customs and Immigration with the passenger at the first port of entry in the United States.  The bags are then rechecked to the final destination after clarence.

Thank you for using continental.com.

"Dear Sharon ****

Thank you for your answer. I appreciate you taking the time to help me.
As I am a seasoned surf-traveler with other airlines and have experienced numerous problems and additional surprise charges in the past I provided you with my flights and my booking confirmation number in order to obtain a written quotation of exactly what I will have to pay for my specific flight and to ensure not to have any surprises.
* Can you please confirm that my flights specified below does not fall under any of the categories "Continental Express* or Continental Connection flights" ?

* As I interpret your answer I will have to pay a total of $100 to bring the boards from Costa Rica - Sweden (one way containing two flights) kindly confirm this. I will have to manually check in my luggage in New York during my transfer but will NOT be charged another $100 for the second part of the flight (New York - Stockholm). Please confirm.

* Can you provide me with information of when the earliest time I can check in my luggage in New York and approximately how long the clearing of customs can be estimated to?

* Due to your lack of response to my question about pre-payment of baggage fees online or otherwise I take it that this is not a service continental offers? Please confirm.

Again, I thank you for your time and assistance.

Have a good day"

Dear Mr. *****:

Thank you for your response.
You are ticketed on non-stop, full jet service for all four flights.

I did not reply to the check in due to the size of the boards.  It seems to me that one board is over the limit. (I leave that to your measurements) [whoooot?? ]If so it will go cargo and arrangements will need to be made in advance of 24 hours with your local cargo department.

You can check in and prepay your baggage fees on-line within 24 hours of departure. The fees are for oneway through travel. Your receipt should print out on the bottom of your boarding passes.  After you clear Customs in Newark you wil immediately check your checked baggage back in.

The length of time it takes to clear Customs in Newark will depend on the number of passengers, the number of bags on the flight, as your bags are special handling (surfboards) they will be or should be unloaded last.

Thank you for using continental.com.

"Dear Sharon ****
Good evening again, I am sorry to bother you once again, but I am still confused;

* Does your answer "non-stop, full jet service" imply that the flight falls under any of the two specified categories "Continental Express* or Continental Connection flights" or not??
I interpret your answer as lenght limit appllying to me on this flight is 115 inches (292 cm) and not 80 inches (203 cm) Please confirm this so I dont make a mistake in adding to much padding to the boards and thereby exceeding the limit.

* Your answer "The fees are for oneway through travel" means that the TOTAL charge from Costa Rica to end destination Stockholm Sweden is $100 and that no additional fee needs to be paid in New York, yes?

* Regarding the measurements the first board is (6'1 x 19" x 2 3/8") (
185.42 cm long ) the other board is (6'6 x 20 7/8 x 2 5/8)  (198.12 cm) Both boards will be transported in a bag that is 6'7" ( 200.66 cm) allowing 2.23 cm for extra padding, stretching the bag to your lowest limit of 203 cm. Please confirm this to make sure I have understood correctly.

Thank you for the information regarding the procedure in New York.

I will also make the necessary luggage payments online within 24 hours of my departure, may I recommend you forward the idea to extend this possibility of online payments to the time of booking for the future as I think it will add value to your customer service and promoting your business?

Best Regards"

"Dear Mr. ****:
I am so sorry for the confusion.

Your flight from San Jose Costa Rica to Newark is not Express Service. It Is full jet size. (2 cabins)

Your flight from Newark to Stockholm is not Express Service.  It is full jet size. (2 cabins)
Your flight from Stockholm to Newark is not Express Service.  It is full jet size. (2 cabins)
Your flight from Newark to San Jose Costa Rica is not Express Service. It is a full jet size. (2 cabins)
You do not have any stops on these flights.

When express service is offered it states on your travel plan.  When there is a stop it will be stated on your travel plan.

I cannot make a commitment to you on your baggage because I am not the one that interpretes what you have.  I can give you the guidelines, and where to find them but you will have to make the determination yourself.  I have advised you that your reservation at this time is a thru fare and the fees paid in Costa Rica will cover the bags to their final destination in Stockholm.  After the boards are wrapped they cannot be bigger than the size mentioned.

You will pay no additional fees in Newark unless you change your plans to a stop over."

"Dear Sharon ****
Thank you for trying to clear things up. I fully understand that you are not responsible for what I in the end actually bring to the airport, but assuming the information I have provided in the email is in fact exactly what I bring I was looking for a confirmation on the total cost as I have had very negative experiences regarding this before with other airlines.

So;  for my specific ticket(s), since "full jet size" seems to mean that the flight does NOT fall under EITHER of the two mentioned exceptions on your information page ("Continental Express* or Continental Connection flights" ) the maximum length that applies to my board bag for the specific ticket mentioned below is; 115 inches (292 cm)?

Please give me a simple yes as confirmation.

The terms "Continental Express", "Continental Connection" and "full jet size" does in fact tells me very little, all I need to know is what maximum applies for my specific flight.

Thank you for the information of baggage fees being non-refundable. Good to know!

Have a nice day!"

Dear Mr ***
Thank you for your response.

I provided from the web site that are published for your convenience are the measurement your two boards contained in one case needs to meet.
If what you are telling me is valid information you will pay $100 dollars USD for the boards.

Thank you for using continental.com.

Regards,

Sharon"
